Judgments on the question of modernity's end depend heavily, of course, on one's own interpretation of what has been most important about the modern period its early understanding of itself as the beginning of a new age in which a universal, a historical rationality would overcome the superstitions of tradition and bring lasting peace and order into human life; the rise of the modern state and the modern science.
