The preliminary work on this book began in June 2005 during a week. That week, Chicago's Looking-glass Theater Company premiered Hillbilly Antigone, a musical reworking of the Sophoclean tragedy. It utilized early country music and melodramatic stage conventions to relocate the ancient conflict between personal conscience and the rule of the state to the Appalachian mountains and the Hatfield-McCoy feuds..
