An introduction to the Heidelberg catechism: sources, history and the..
In the absence of a critical Latin-German-English edition of the HC with a good historical introduction, this seems to be the best available option. The historical essays are decent, but they strike me as a bit tepid and tied up with personal biases. Lyle Bierma is intent on presenting the HC as "ecumenical" by making some attempts to accommodate Lutherans, but its abject failure to achieve the intended unity is not examined. Bierma and others contributing essays to the volume significantly downplay the bitterly divided sociopolitical context of the HC and do not dig into the ample, deeply interesting, concrete and personal stories of the principals involved in its creation.
