"Merely a symbol," an earthbound gesture, say radical Protestants of bread and the cup. Yet such terms do not describe what these believers experience in worship. They come to communion with awe, certain that something expressing their deepest beliefs about Christ and the church will happen when bread is broken in faith and love.
As in other churches of the left wing of Christian tradition, Mennonite leaders have been concerned almost solely with articulating a corrective to what they see as misunderstanding and misuse of sacraments at the time of the Reformation. They have given little attention to positive claims made for these ordinances by radical reformers.
