For centuries the Matthean portrait of Peter has been of intense interest both to biblical scholarship and to the Christian Church, but for different reasons. Matthew's apparently inconsistent portrayal of Peter seemed to defy critical analysis while still serving as a controversial foundation for a huge ecclesiastical superstructure, the Petrine Office.
Peter in Matthew argues that contemporary scholarly indeed adequate to the analytical task if the practitioners are willing to accept the anti-traditional conclusions the reseultant evidence suggests.
