The Lord's prayer
Author Kenneth Stevenson writes this book for a wide readership. He briefly introduces key thinkers, but focuses on their interaction with the prayer; this allows the "historically uninformed reader" to get to the point of what Tertullian or Luther wrote concerning the prayer. Of course, those who have studied these periods of history may desire more information on the historical circumstances of this or that historical figure, but that is beyond Stevenson's goal. Each chapter has a helpful summary to trace general trends of interpretation in that time period (if there are six or seven petitions, how "your kingdom come" was understood, etc.), so if one gets bogged down in the details then he/she can jump to the end to get the big picture..
