The handbook of Christian counseling: a practical guide
Clinical psychologist Dr. Timothy Foster wrote in the first chapter of this 1995 book, "This book is designed to give specific training and guidance to the Christian worker (professional or volunteer) involved in establishing and maintaining an effective, godly counseling ministry... I have made a conscious effort to make this book as practical and specific as possible... In counseling... meaning well doesn't always mean dong well... Let me give you a good example. A young mother came to me in obvious distress. She was frightened and overwhelmed by guilt... she had gone to talk to her pastor, and he picked up a Bible... and said, 'All the help you need is in here. If you would just believe everything in this book, you wouldn't be depressed.' As you might guess, she left the pastor feeling more guilty, more fearful, and more depressed... Obviously, to avoid making a bad situation worse, potential counselors need to learn some basic counseling techniques."..
