If you want to do a study on some of the Genesis stories from the vantage point of the relationships between the main characters, this is a good study for you. She looks at the interactions between Sarah and Hagar, Isaac and Jacob, Rachel and Leah, etc. She looks at how deception and power plays in their relationships. Don't expect to find a critical commentary on Genesis, a comparison to extra-biblical witnesses, or a discussion of the documentary hypothesis or counter-proposals. She deals only with the text itself. The strength of this book is in her thoroughness, the level of detail that she brings to her argument, and her faithfulness to the text. Jacobs is a very careful scholar who wants to see the text speak for itself without using theology to "smooth out" apparent difficulties..
