A history of Christianity, v.2: readings in the history of the church
We know there were early church heroes. Then came martyrs. Christianity spread through the Spirit and a loving converted community willing to give up on all the other Gods for this one God. The church out of necessity becomes more and more organized for better and for worse. Then the society collapses and eventually the church finds itself pretty much in charge of things in that part of the world. The heroes over the centuries seem to be the ones who take a social risk for what they believe to be following the real faith, following Jesus. A lot of those dudes were killed for “heresy.” The editor points out more than once that we cannot condescendingly separate ourselves from the Medieval church era – it brought us churches, schools, universities, art, music and many values we still hold. If you’re a Christian, then someone in this era kept the faith alive for you and me.
