Richard McBrien is probably one of the foremost Church historian of the 20th century in America. He is the most grounded individual I have ever encountered, and I have been in the presence of many theologians and biblical scholars during my graduate and post-graduate years. He is a solid individual who speaks the truth about our faith and our church. This rattles the cages of many people, but so be it. McBrien is left of center, but thank God we have these people who challenge us to look beyond our narrow mindedness of Church. If we didn't have such visionary people like him and John XXIII our church would still be pre-Vatican II and we wouldn't have all the great social justice teachings that have come out of Vatican II.
