The identity of Jesus Christ
The motivations that prompted Hans Frei to write this book are complex, varied, and difficult to express in simple terms. Published in serial form in 1967, entitled "The Mystery of the Presence of Christ", the essay was a "theological experiment" through which Frei's thinking developed on a basic conviction: "that Christian faith involves a unique affirmation about Jesus Christ, vis., not only that He is the presence of God but also that knowing His identity is identical with having Him present". Yale had published Frei's book tracing the gradual decay of the traditional way of reading the Bible as the Word of God (The Eclipse of Biblical Narrative 1974). He acknowledges that his essay, with its "theological proposal", may offer an alternative, resting on a reading of the Gospel narratives he calls "realistic narrative". This reading is based on one of the characteristics of the Gospel story, namely "that it is history like-in its language as well as its depiction of a common public world, and in the close interaction of character and incident".
