Our Baptist ancestors took preaching seriously, and for good reason. Preaching benefited them in a number of ways. Foremost, of course, preaching confronted them with a message from God's holy Word by means of a God-appointed messanger. God knew from the beginning of time the His people would be vulnerable to superstition and attracted to mystical and mysterious practices that purported to have secret and " divine" sanction.
