A mirror for simple souls: the mystical work of Marguerite Porete
This thirteenth-century mystical classic was a staple of popular devotional reading in monastries and convents throughout Europe for over six hundred years. Long thought to be the work of an anonymous French mystic, assumed to be male, it has only recently been identified as the work of a woman, Marguerite Porete, a member of the Beguine sisterhood, who taught in northern France from the 1290s onward.
