Jesus within Judaism

CHARLESWORTH, James H. - Personal Name;

Though this book is a bit dated by now since its publication in the late 80's, it is still a very instructive and useful study into many aspects of Judaism before and during the times of Jesus, and specifically how that sheds light on understanding Jesus in his context, as well as understanding the ways the earliest followers of Jesus went on to interpret and portray him in their stories, remembrances and writings about him.
Charlesworth is one of the top notch scholars in the field of ancient Jewish literature and in this book he is keen to point out and show, how Jesus should be understood, or sought to be understood, in his own cultural context. Charlesworth takes many aspects of literary and archaeological finds from the Judaism before and during Jesus' time and place, and then helps the reader to gain a better grasp of the cultural heritage at work in and around Jesus and the early christian movement. A very helpful introductory study..
