The Marks of God's children
Jean Taffin (d. 1602) wrote this book in light of the severe persecution in the Reformed churches of the Lowlands in the latter part of the 16th century. Several times in his life as a pastor he had to flee with other Reformed Christians to escape persecution. Taffin was also concerned about the political situation of his day, which had an anti-Reformation bent (contributing to the persecution, of course). This book on assurance of salvation and spiritual comfort in suffering needs to be read in light of this historical context.
Taffin wrote this book to fellow Christians suffering for being Christians. He starts out by explaining the beauty of heaven, eternal blessedness for those who trust in Jesus. In fact, wrote, Taffin, trials and tests in this life are "made lighter" by the fact of redemption in Christ and the promise of eternal blessedness (p. 26).
