Sacral kingship in ancient Israel
In a country where the monarchy is important to some but whose power if merely token, it is hard to think back to a society whose worldview envisaged the family as the basic unit, the tribe as the next unit and the nation embodied in the king and where the king prospered the nation prospered and where he didn't it didn't. It is hard to put oneself in the shoes of the chronicler who could dismiss a whole era in the words 'King....did evil- in the sight of the Lord' as if no more need be said. Yet, for all-this, we still pray the psalms daily in the office and breathe these sentiments. We may do a mental double-think on them and use them as aspirations for good government, for justice with peace, for our working together towards the messianic age. Those who pray the psalms..
