Wise fools in Shakespeare
In Wise Fools in Shakespeare, Dr. Goldsmith demonstrates how Shakerspeare took the wise fool of Erasmus and set him moving on the Elizabethan stage. He show's that Shakespeare's fool are not personified abstractions or mere theatrical types but that they are complex individuals clearly differentiated from each other. As we read, we laugh again at Touchstone's whimsical wooing of Audrey, at Freste's gulling of Malvolio, and at the sly nonsenes of Lear's Fool.
