Gnosis and the New Testament: gnosticism and newly dicovered..
From the writings of Irenaus in the second century to those of Rudolf Bultmann, "Gnosticism" has been a recurring subject in Christian theology.
The author's brief history of the study Gnosticism avoids generalizations which cannot be subtanciated. It is particulary helpful because of its inclusion of the chief results of the Messina Colloquium of 1966. The sama care is shown in the chapter on "Gnosticism" in the New Testament. While recognizing that Gnosticism may have existed in an incipient from at the time Christianity emerged, the author is not ready to admit that all gnostic motifs in the New Testament were derived from this source.
