Redemptive history and the New Testament scriptures
Herman Ridderbos (1909-2007) was a reformed New Testament scholar and biblical theologian. This book was first written in 1963, revised in 1968, and then underwent another revision in 1988. Apparently showing a presuppositional bent, Ridderboss states in the Introduction to his book that “In this study we are not seeking an extra biblical basis for faith.” (ix) He further states that he is “seeking to delineate the essence of Scripture and the nature of its authority within the framework of the history of redemption; we are seeking to clarify the relationship between the history of redemption and Scripture.” (ix) This alone makes this work unique among discussions of the New Testament canon in 20th century scholarly literature. It is more typical for works of this nature to proceed without the presupposition of biblical faith and to approach the development and origin of the New Testament canon from that perspective.
