The enemy in the household: family violence in Deuteronomy.., c. 1-2
Our enemies are members of our own household. This is a strong, emotionally laden statement, in the context of both ancient Israel and today. We can trust no one, not even our dearest friends and family. Our spouse is a spy in our arms and our own children rebel against us. These people are our friends and kin, living and working by our side, but they have become our enemies, those who seek our harm, not our good. Enmity here marks the people who should be our closest companions as outsiders who have infiltrated our very home. Enmity proves itself to be a question of identity. For biblical Israel, identity is marked by loyalty.
