This book does not lead to a total understanding of the Old Testament text - or any text. Words must be always be taken in context. They have an area of meaning, thus 'amar' may sometimes mean 'speak' sometimes 'command'. Thus, it overlaps with 'dabar' on the one hand and 'sawa' on the other. Alsp, the etymologies of words are not always determinative of meanings. In English we use words every day that are of pagan origin but no longer bear any such connotation. Biblical usage is therefore the best criterion of the meaning of a word, and to that end our authors have depended heavily on their concordances.
