Engaging exposition
This section of the book includes guidance in structuring messages, adding illustrations and application, and creating effective introductions and conclusions. The section on application was especially helpful, between pages 176-192 he lists and explains nine methods to, “instruct and inspire people to apply Holy Scripture to their everyday lives” (176). The methods listed were very practical and there were several charts that were very helpful for the reader to visualize the method the chart was illustrating.
The chapter on writing an effective conclusion was helpful as well, although this reviewer wished it could have been a bit longer. The methods listed were very helpful; many of them were a summary of what other ministers found to be helpful. Ramesh Richard, John Broadus, Hershel York, E.K. Bailey, G. Campbell Morgan, Bryan Chapell, and Tony Merida were all referenced in this short chapter. This is not a negative for this reviewer, it is wise to learn from others who have done this task effectively and Akin has done the reader a great service in listing their techniques. This chapter will be helpful for a student or even an experienced minister.
