American Catholic preaching and piety in the time of John Carroll
Two hundred years ago John Carroll was ordained bishop. The Maryland-born Irish-American had gone to Europe as a boy for his education, had entered the society of Jesus and been ordained a priest. After the suppression of the Jesuit order Carroll returned to his family home, somewhat disillusioned, but still dedicated to the sacred ministry. In the 1780s he emerged as a leader among his brethren, both by their and Rome's choice.
